potion-makers by Allie Duff

we find mason jars filled with bacon grease
under grandmom’s kitchen sink

ingredients hidden, we’re sure,
for her witch’s brew

and make concoctions
that bubble unexpectedly,
table-top volcanoes
that are not quite magic

we try
to inherit her powers

instead,
we inherit brittle bones, anemic blood
and just enough
of her iron will.
